I discovered Drunk Elephant via Reddit on r/SkincareAddiction in 2016 when it was an ‘indie’ brand and seen as innovative in skincare mostly because their products are fragrance-free, SLS-free, silicone-free, and use high-quality ingredients.
The reason why I didn’t run to Sephora at first when Drunk Elephant made its introduction to Canada is apparent. Their products are expensive, not La Mer skincare expensive, but up there.
It wasn’t until late December 2017 amid a drying acne treatment where I read reviews and decided to buy the B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum to layer with my hyaluronic acid serum.
A big lesson in the beauty market is where skincare and makeup differ. You can buy a $63 eyeshadow palette and decide three years later when it’s about to expire that it was an indulgent purchase. When you buy a $63 serum, you need to prepare yourself to make a long-term investment because if you like, the way the product feels and enhances your skin. You’ll likely have to re-purchase it every three to six months.
For instance, if you’re watching a celebrity’s skincare routine video and they’re using Dr. Barbara Strum products. You may see them using a $90 facial cleanser, $390 serum, and $280 moisturizer. If you were a ‘regular’ person copying their routine, know that you would be spending thousands of dollars every three to six months on skincare, only skincare.
Skincare is more of an investment than makeup. Even using drugstore skincare, is an investment, and you need to make smart choices in those aisles.
When I receive Sephora gift cards, and V.I.B sales happen. Know that I’m using those offers to re-purchase this Drunk Elephant serum because I’m attached to it now after three years of continuous use. That’s the choice I make.
What Makes The Drunk Elephant B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum Special?
B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum is special because it feels like a gel hyaluronic acid serum, but it’s much more than that. Drunk Elephant formulates the serum with pro-vitamin B5, pineapple ceramide, sodium hyaluronate (hyaluronic acid), and niacinamide.
The ingredient pineapple ceramide is so unique because it supports natural luminosity and improves the appearance of skin texture and tone. While also building upon your skin’s moisture barrier, making your other skincare products even more useful.
Combining all these hydrating ingredients also lets the niacinamide in the serum feel less harsh on the skin than a traditional active niacinamide serum.
How I Use The Drunk Elephant B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum In My Skincare Routine
In the morning, I wash my face with only lukewarm tap water. I then spritz Avene Thermal Spring Water and lightly pat dry with a micro-fibre face towel. My face is still damp and not completely dry when I apply The Ordinary 2% Hyaluronic Acid + B5 Serum. I then apply the Drunk Elephant B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum and continue on with the rest of my morning skincare routine.
In the evening, I double cleanse (micellar water + La Roche-Posay Toleriane Dermo-Cleanser) and use lukewarm tap water. I then spritz Avene Thermal Spring Water and lightly pat dry with a micro-fibre face towel. My face is still damp and not completely dry when I apply The Ordinary 2% Hyaluronic Acid + B5 Serum. I then apply the Drunk Elephant B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum and continue on with the rest of my evening skincare routine.
